Patagonia, infinite and remote

On the southern frontier of South America lies one of the most rugged and pristine environments of the world. Patagonia is shared between Argentina and Chile, and it covers a vast territory that starts at the edge of La Pampa in the northern Argentinean side (Palena’s province in Chile) and finishes in Cape Horn (the last tip of land before Antarctica, right below Tierra del Fuego). This is over 2800 km long.  On the east, the Atlantic, and on the west, the Pacific Ocean.

Tours in Ushuaia, Punta Arenas, Tierra del Fuego & Patagonia Cruises

This is the Southernmost tip in the world, the last civilization latitude before Antarctica.   Ushuaia, easily reachable from Buenos Aires by direct flights, shows a perfect combination between the mountains & the sea: the Beagle Channel,  the National Park Tierra del Fuego, and Lakes Fagnano & Escondido, are its most popular hot spots.  Its neighbor Chilean southernmost continental city, Punta Arenas, is another strategic hub to combine with it.   From both cities depart Cruise Ships to Antarctica, Cape Horn, and the Chilean Fiords, surrounded by scarped mountains and pristine glaciers.  It´s also a good area to find ocean wildlife (Penguins, Humpback Whales, étc). If you have enough time, don´t forget to visit Puerto Williams and  Estancia Harberton.  If you’re keen on cruises, we invite you to check our section Ushuaia to Cape Horn & Patagonia Cruises.

Right on the other side of the Andes, at a similar latitude than Bariloche, we can find the Chilean Lake District.  A very green area full of lakes, mountains, rivers, sounds (Pacific Ocean), and incredible landscapes.  Some of the main attractions are Puerto Varas,  Frutillar, Puerto Octay, Osorno, Saltos de Petrohué, Peulla,  Cochamó, and Alerce Andino National Park.   If you continue to the south, you will find the epic Carretera Austral (Austral Road) and the beautiful region of Aysen.  This area is plenty of contrasts and different kinds of attractions, such as the Marble Cathedrals,  Quelat,  Caleta Gonzalo,  Cerro Castillo, Caleta Tortel, Pumalin National Park, and Villa O’Higgins.
The argentinian Ruta 40 stretches foro ver 5000 km from Southern Patagonia till the limit with Bolivia, in the province of Jujuy. The Patagonian part crosses different kinds of attractions, including some of the regions mentioned above. One of the remotest areas is the one next to the Cave of Hands (rock paintings) and Posta Los Toldos refuge (wildlife), both picturesque areas in the middle of the infinite steppe.
