Patagonia tours: infinite and remote

On the southern frontier of South America lies one of the most rugged and pristine environments of the world: Patagonia. Despite the fact it has been the playground for die-hard adventurers for decades,  tourism has made it possible to explore this extensive part of the world in comfort as well, making it possible for every traveler to put Patagonia on the to-visit list. The region is shared between Argentina and Chile, and it covers a vast territory that starts at the edge of La Pampa in the northern Argentinean side (Palena’s province in Chile) and finishes in Cape Horn (the last tip of land before Antarctica, right below Tierra del Fuego). This is over 2800 km long.  On the east, the Atlantic, and on the west, the Pacific Ocean.

Península Valdés, Puerto Madryn & Atlantic litoral: Ocean’s wildlife paradise.

Scenery for the self-stranding hunting technique of the Orcas (Killer Whales). the immensity of the ocean and the plateau stretching from horizon to horizon. This region in Atlantic Patagonia is a dream for Ocean Wildlife lovers.   The protagonists are the Whales, the Penguins, the Orcas (Killer Whales), and the Sea Elephants, but you can also find lots of other animals, such as maras, foxes, rheas, sea lions, birds, etc.   It’s important to have in mind when is the right time to see each species, for this you can take a look at the  Puerto Madryn Fauna Calendar.

Patagonia Andina, the steppe, Pacific Ocean, Beagle Channel, and Fjords

Torres del Paine National Park has become a great area to spot pumas in the wilderness. Likewise, Patagonia Argentina National Park, and Patagonia Chile National Park, are following its steps.  Condors are the witness of the majestic Patagonian skies.  Humpback Whales, dolphins and penguins, fill the Fjords and Channels with life.

As a kick off, we invite you to get inspired by the following travel samples:

Tours in Ushuaia, Punta Arenas, Tierra del Fuego & Patagonia Cruises

This is the Southernmost tip in the world, the last civilization latitude before Antarctica.   Ushuaia, easily reachable from Buenos Aires by direct flights, shows a perfect combination between the mountains & the sea: the Beagle Channel,  the National Park Tierra del Fuego, and Lakes Fagnano & Escondido, are its most popular hot spots.  Its neighbor Chilean southernmost continental city, Punta Arenas, is another strategic hub to combine with it.   From both cities depart Cruise Ships to Antarctica, Cape Horn, and the Chilean Fiords, surrounded by scarped mountains and pristine glaciers.  It´s also a good area to find ocean wildlife (Penguins, Humpback Whales, étc). If you have enough time, don´t forget to visit Puerto Williams and  Estancia Harberton.  If you’re keen on cruises, we invite you to check our section Ushuaia to Cape Horn & Patagonia Cruises.

Tours in El Calafate, El Chaltén, & Torres del Paine: Glaciers, granite Mountains, & awesome views

These three terrific destinations concentrate the magic of the “Glaciers World”.   El Calafate is easily reachable from Buenos Aires by direct flights and is the gate to go to El Chaltén, the trekking capital of Argentina. In El Calafate, apart from the Perito Moreno Glacier, you will find other attractions such as Glacier Upsala & Onelli, or the pristine Lake Argentino.  El Chaltén, has its powerful Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy mountains, with impressive views from different sides. Torres del Paine, already in Chilean territory (Puerto Natales is its closest city), is definitively one of the most beautiful pearls in Patagonia. With unlimited outstanding natural sceneries, the Horns & the Towers stand like sentinels overall.

Bariloche & Argentinian Lake District

This region is plenty of rivers, forests, lakes, lagoons, volcanoes, and picturesque cities & villages:    Bariloche, Villa La Angostura, San Martín de los Andes,  7 Lakes, & Los Alerces National Park, are just some of the many attractions that you can find on the way.  Its neighbor Chilean Lakes District is as beautiful as the previous one, and you can easily join both through the legendary Cross Lakes excursion that joins Bariloche (Argentina) with Puerto Montt (Chile).

Chilean Lake District, Aysén, Carretera Austral, Ruta 40, & other destinations

Right on the other side of the Andes, at a similar latitude than Bariloche, we can find the Chilean Lake District.  A very green area full of lakes, mountains, rivers, sounds (Pacific Ocean), and incredible landscapes.  Some of the main attractions are Puerto Varas,  Frutillar, Puerto Octay, Osorno, Saltos de Petrohué, Peulla,  Cochamó, and Alerce Andino National Park.   If you continue to the south, you will find the epic Carretera Austral (Austral Road) and the beautiful region of Aysen.  This area is plenty of contrasts and different kinds of attractions, such as the Marble Cathedrals,  Quelat,  Caleta Gonzalo,  Cerro Castillo, Caleta Tortel, Pumalin National Park, and Villa O’Higgins.
The argentinian Ruta 40 stretches foro ver 5000 km from Southern Patagonia till the limit with Bolivia, in the province of Jujuy. The Patagonian part crosses different kinds of attractions, including some of the regions mentioned above. One of the remotest areas is the one next to the Cave of Hands (rock paintings) and Posta Los Toldos refuge (wildlife), both picturesque areas in the middle of the infinite steppe. Adittionally, both Argentinian and Chilean sides of Patagonia count with other hidden pearls, such as Palena, Puerto Deseado, and other destinations.
