De los Estados Island and Mitre Peninsula are among the most mysterious and wildest areas of Argentina. The first one is a natural reserve, and it is where the story “Faro del fin del Mundo” (The Lighthouse at the End of the World), a book written by Julio Verne, takes place. This island is located at the entrance of the Beagle Channel and is one of the photographers´ favorite places. It has been used as a prison, as a naval base and as a protected natural reserve for flora and fauna. Recently, it has been opened to public. Before this, only scientific investigations were allowed. Mitre Peninsula is the eastern tip of Tierra del Fuego. It has been kept wild due to its remote nature.
The journey begins in Ushuaia, where you’ll board the expedition vessel and set sail along the Beagle Channel. This route offers stunning views of rugged coastlines, and you might spot marine life such as whales or seabirds. The first night’s anchorage is typically at Puerto Español, an area steeped in historical significance.
Start your day exploring the historical sites of Puerto Español, once a retreat for early missionaries. Highlights include caves used as shelters and the remnants of a former estancia. You’ll also discover unique landmarks, such as a modern art installation—a pyramid marking a geospatial cube’s corner. Enjoy the dramatic landscapes and quiet beaches before resuming your journey toward Isla de los Estados. If you’re keen on visit this area deeply, we recommend you our Peninsula Mitre trekking expedition.
Upon arrival at Isla de los Estados, immerse yourself in its wild beauty. This unspoiled island is a haven for wildlife, with opportunities to see sea lions, penguins, and seabirds. The itinerary includes hikes through dense forests, explorations of rugged cliffs, and visits to historical landmarks like the ruins of a penal colony. Depending on weather and conditions, there might be opportunities for kayaking or Zodiac excursions along the island’s dramatic coastline.
Depart Isla de los Estados and begin the return journey through the Beagle Channel. This leg of the trip offers more chances to spot marine life and soak in the panoramic views of Tierra del Fuego’s pristine wilderness. Evening anchorage allows for reflection on the adventure in this remote corner of the world.
Arrive back in Ushuaia, concluding the expedition. Disembark with unforgettable memories of Isla de los Estados, a destination of unparalleled natural and historical richness.
