This lifetime experience will let you breathe Patagonia in a unique way. Escorted by a guide on his vehicle, you’ll enjoy the best sceneries of the Argentinian and Chilean roads, riding in a rented motorbike. This is a flexible itinerary, which can be adapted to your wishes and preferences. Mountains, forests, rivers, lakes, glaciers, incredible wildlife, the legendary steppe, the Beagle Channel, and the endless sky will be part of this memorable story!
Driving in Patagonia it’s an experience that allows you to connect not only with nature, but also with yourself. Not only getting impressed by the dramatic landscapes that surround you, but also to feel the magic of the simple things. Like sharing a “Mate-tea” at the side of the road, while you realize with gratitude, that you’re feeling alive.
Arrival in Ushuaia, and transfer to your hotel. At an agreed-upon time, you’ll meet your guide, who will escort you during your Patagonia motorcycle tour. Today, you’ll familiarize with the motorbikes, and revise the plan for the next days. The type of motorbikes, same as the itinerary, and gear/insurance/services included, will be set up in advance, so you focus only on enjoying. During the afternoon, we suggest you to navigate on the Beagle Channel! Below you’ll see the itinerary that we have in plan for this trip:
During the morning, you’ll visit with your bikes the National Park Tierra del Fuego. You’ll combine a little bit of riding with some nice walks. In the afternoon, you’ll leave your bikes for half a day, in order to do the half day excursion that leads to the Martillo Island, full of penguins (between October and March). You’ll walk among penguins for about 1 hour, and combine this experience with a brief visit to Harberton Ranch.
Accommodation in Ushuaia.
Today, you’ll drive from Ushuaia to Rio Grande. It’s a very scenic and beautiful ride, since you’ll cross the Andes Range in the only part where it lies west to east, with different kinds of landscapes. You will certainly make some stops for photos and entertaining. The highest altitude is around 425 meters over the sea level, at Garibaldi’s Pass.
Estimated distance: 232 km, mostly paved, about 3 hours non-sop “car time”, but it’s very likely that it will take you way more, considering that you visit some attractions on the way.
From Río Grande, still on the island of Tierra del Fuego, you’ll have two choices of connecting with El Calafate:
Driving through Cabo Vírgenes (km Zero of Ruta 40, in the province of Santa Cruz), or through Torres del Paine. Through Cabo Vírgenes would allow you to be on day 5 in El Calafate, and through Torres del Paine 2-3 days longer.
Furthermore, you can do both options in case you want it. We can discuss it together when you get in touch!
Already in El Calafate, visit the humongous Glacier Perito Moreno, about 70 km from the city (paved road).
Overnight in El Calafate.
Note: this itinerary dedicates only 2 nights (one full day) for El Calafate. If you like glaciers, we suggest you to extend your visit to 3 nights, in order to navigate to glaciers Upsala & Spegazzini.
This road leads to one of the most spectacular views in whole Patagonia, both Argentinian and Chilean sides (only if the skies are not clouded). You’ll drive along Ruta 40 until you get a detour of about 90 km to El Chaltén (paved road). This detour is along provincial road 23, with stunning views of the Fitz Roy & Torre Mounts from the distance. Upon arrival, time to relax and enjoy this spectacular area.
Distance: 220 km – about 3 hours.
Overnight in El Chaltén.
This day will be dedicated to exploring the surroundings of El Chaltén. This is a village that lies at the foot of Mounts Fitz Roy and Torre, and it’s the capital for trekking in Argentina. If you like trekking, we strongly recommend you to stay at least 3 nights here (and not 2 as it’s on this itinerary).
You can do some of the iconic hikes (there are different options, for different levels, with views to the Fitz Roy and Torre Mounts) or drive through a gravel road to Lago del Desierto, near to the border with Chile.
Steppe, steppe, and more steppe. 388 km (77 km are gravel road, rest paved) along the Ruta 40. Around 7 hours (or more).
Accommodation in Las Horquetas at the “moto posada”.
Drive from Las Horquetas to “Posta Los Toldos”. You can make use of this day to visit the River Pinturas Canyon, the Cave of Hands (rock paintings – UNESCO site), and other nice attractions in Patagonia National Park.
The distance from Las Horquetas to Posta Los Toldos is 185 km (2.5 hours – mostly paved road) PLUS the time you want to spend visiting the National Park Patagonia Argentina, which has some gravel roads. As the landscape is stepparian, the canyon provides a beautiful contrast.
Accommodation at Refugio Posta Los Toldos.
Today you’ll leave Patagonia Argentina for a while, in order to enter the dramatic Carretera Austral. The crossing will be through Los Antiguos, and you’ll continue until you reach Rio Tranquilo.
There, you’ll have some time to do the navigation to the Marble Cathedrals (a very beautiful series of marble caves at the Carrara Lake). Overnight at Puerto Guadal.
Estimated distance: 240 km, approx 5 hours.
You’ll continue driving in Chilean Patagonia along the Carretera Austral (Austral Road), until reaching Coyhaique.
It will be a couple of hours, with a very nice scenery on the way, such as the Cerro Castillo National Park. This area is very green, with mountains, rivers, and lakes.
Arrival at Coyhaique and overnight. Estimated distance: 274 km (more than 5 hours).
Still on the Austral Road, you’ll drive up to the north until Puyuhuapi. On the way, Queulat National Park deserves a visit, same as other short stops to see the landscapes. 233 km / more than 3.30 hours.
Accommodation in Puyuhuapi.
Your Patagonia motorcycle tour continues, leaving the Austral Road behind, and entering Argentina again in Esquel. This is the gate of the Patagonian Argentinian lake district, plenty of mountains, lakes, forests, rivers, and villages.
If you travel in October, you could visit the Tulipan fields near Trevelin!
Overnight in Esquel.
This day will be through an incredible, scenic road. Firstly, you’ll visit the National Park Los Alerces (UNESCO site), home to ancient larch trees, colorful lakes, rivers, and mountains. The gravel road and the natural surroundings, are ideal for photography.
Keep driving up to the north, now along Ruta 40, and after doing two stopovers in Lago Puelo and El Bolsón, reach Bariloche.
Arrival and accommodation in Bariloche.
Note: if you have the chance and are in the mood, you can stay 1 night in Lago Puelo, in order to split this way in two and get the best out of the views.
Estimated distance: 400 km (full day).
Make use of this day to visit Bariloche’s surroundings, including the epic views from Campanario Hill, Llao Llao, and Short Circuit.
Drive to Villa La Angostura (88 km from Bariloche), and enjoy the natural surroundings of this picturesque village!
Overnight in Villa La Angostura
Your motorcycle tour in Patagonia will end with an epic circuit: the 7 Lakes road. This famous scenic drive joins the patagonian cities of Villa La Angostura and San Martin de los Andes (110 km), through different lakes with majestic views.
Arrival in San Martin de los Andes, time to relax, and celebrate.
Return the motorbikes, and transfer to the airport in San Martín de los Andes, in order to board your flight back to Buenos Aires.
