Cabo Vírgenes is a Cape located in the Santa Cruz province, near the border with Chile and the Magellan Strait. It is notably the starting point of Ruta 40, one of Argentina’s most iconic roads. Known as “KM Zero” this milestone marks the beginning of a journey that stretches over 5,000 kilometers through some of the most spectacular scenery in Argentina, including the Andes Mountains, glacial lakes, and vast steppe landscapes.
In addition to Ruta 40, Cabo Vírgenes is also conveniently close to Ruta 3, another major highway that runs parallel to the Atlantic coast of Patagonia. This road is vital for those exploring the eastern side of the region and offers its own unique set of adventures and sights.
It’s about 2 hours from Rio Gallegos, 6 hours from El Calafate, and a long driving day to Ushuaia (crossing the Magellan Strait).
The Cabo Vírgenes Lighthouse
One of the most iconic landmarks in Cabo Vírgenes is the Cabo Vírgenes Lighthouse. Erected in 1904, this historic lighthouse has guided countless sailors safely through the treacherous waters of the Magellan Strait. Standing tall against the backdrop of the Southern Ocean, the lighthouse is a testament to human perseverance and ingenuity. Visitors can explore the area around the lighthouse, soaking in the panoramic views and imagining the lives of the keepers who once maintained this remote beacon.
Penguins in Cabo Virgenes
Cabo Vírgenes is also home to a remarkable penguin rookery. Each year, thousands of Magellanic penguins migrate to this area to breed and raise their young. The penguin season typically runs from September to April, offering visitors the chance to witness these charming creatures up close. Walking among the penguins and observing their natural behavior is a truly unforgettable experience.
In addition to penguins, from Cabo Vírgenes is possible to spot Southern Right Whales when they migrate from the Antarctic Circle to Peninsula Valdes every year, usually around April. These majestic marine mammals migrate from the Antarctic Circle to the warmer waters of Peninsula Valdés, passing by Cabo Vírgenes along the way.
