The province of Misiones, in northeastern Argentina, is a jewel of the Atlantic Rainforest (also Misiones Rainforest). Though it covers only a small portion of the country, it holds an outsized share of Argentina’s biodiversity, with more than 450 recorded bird species. Between lush subtropical forest, red-soil trails, and the spectacle of Iguazú Falls, Misiones is a dream destination for birdwatchers.
Iconic Birds of Misiones
Toucans & Manakins
- Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco) – Iconic for its massive orange bill, frequently seen around fruiting trees.
- Chestnut-eared Aracari (Pteroglossus castanotis) – A smaller, colorful aracari often moving in groups.
- Helmeted Manakin (Antilophia galeata) – Small but striking, with its red crest.
- Band-tailed Manakin and Blue Manakin – Charismatic leks and display behavior make them favorites among birders. We love seeing them in La Lorenza, if possible.
Raptors
- Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja) – Powerful and elusive; present in remote forest tracts.
- Black-and-white Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus melanoleucus) – Elegant forest raptor, sometimes soaring above the canopy.
Rainforest Highlights
- Black-fronted Piping-Guan (Pipile jacutinga) – Endangered; subject of active conservation and reintroduction efforts.
- Red-ruffed Fruitcrow (Pyroderus scutatus) – A large, dramatic cotinga and emblematic Atlantic Forest species.
- Plush-crested Jay (Cyanocorax chrysops) – Bold and intelligent; common along forest edges and trails.
Iguazú Falls Specialty
- Great Dusky Swift (Cypseloides senex) – The icon of Iguazú Falls; colonies roost and nest behind the waterfalls.
Best Areas for Birding in Misiones
- Iguazú National Park – World-famous waterfalls plus rich rainforest birdlife along well-maintained trails.
- Urugua-í Provincial Park – Vast protected forest with chances for rarer raptors and Atlantic Forest endemics.
- Cruce Caballero Provincial Park – Excellent for forest specialists and more secluded birding.
- San Sebastián de la Selva & private reserves – Intimate experiences with local guides and high diversity.
