De los Estados Island and Mitre Peninsula are among the most mysterious and wildest areas of Argentina. The first one is a natural reserve, and it is where the story “Faro del fin del Mundo” (The Lighthouse at the End of the World), a book written by Julio Verne, takes place. This island is located at the entrance of the Beagle Channel and is one of the photographers´ favorite places. It has been used as a prison, as a naval base and as a protected natural reserve for flora and fauna. Recently, it has been opened to public. Before this, only scientific investigations were allowed. Mitre Peninsula is the eastern tip of Tierra del Fuego. It has been kept wild due to its remote nature.
Let’s start with the easiest part of Teeth of Navarino trek! The main town in Navarino Island is Puerto Williams (Chile) and our starting point of the day. You can reach Puerto Williams via Ushuaia (Argentina) or Punta Arenas (Chile). You will walk for about 3 km until the beginning of the path. In this first part of the experience, you will explore a sort of easy flat terrain and get amazed with the first views of this hike. The first stop is Laguna Del Salto (Salto Lagoon). At the south of this lagoon there is a perfect plain to camp!
Ready to climb? Great! Today we leave Del Salto Lagoon and ascend to Paso Australia (805m). This part of the route is a little strenuous, especially if the ground is wet or has snow. We continue to Paso de los Dientes (743m) and descend to the valley. Going along the edge of Laguna Picacho and other two smaller ones, we arrive to a fork in the path. Taking the left side of it, we are already nearer to Navarino´s teeth, so let´s continue! After another descending, we reach the Teeth Lagoon (Laguna de los Dientes) and then camp at Laguna Escondida.
Today we leave Laguna Escondida back and ascend a short but abrupt slope that lead us to Paso Ventarron. We continue going up and through native pretty woods until we reach Laguna Martillo (Hammer Lagoon). Overnight at the camping area.
Get ready to reach the highest point of this adventure! We enter into native Lenga woods and then our way starts getting steep until we arrive to Virginia’s Pass, which is at 859 mts above the sea. While we go down back to Puerto Wiliams, discover the wonderful views of this last part of the trek, such as Los Guanacos Lagoon, the North of the island and the incredible Beagle Channel.
Optional: Add one more day to this tour by camping at Los Guanacos Lagoon. At the southern edge of it, there is a great place to camp at the beginning of the woods.
