Patagonia, unique and special
Argentina and Chile share one of the most beautiful regions in the world: Patagonia. On this list, we have included some of the best places to stay, including not only “conventional Patagonia luxury hotels”, but also places that outstand for some reason, either for offering great experiences or spectacular views.
Bariloche: Llao Llao Resort & Spa
This hotel is one of the main attractions in Bariloche, whether you stay there or not. This hotel was designed by the famous architect Alejandro Bustillo in 1938, the same year that the Nahuel Huapi National Park was created. This hotel is one of the first Patagonia luxury hotels. Unfortunately, in 1939 the original building burnt in a horrible fire that destroyed the building completely and was re-opened in 1940. Many members of the aristocracy, officials, diplomats and famous guests have stayed at the hotel.
Its location is unique. From there you can enjoy views of Cerro Lopez and Tronador’s peaks. Also, you can enjoy the shores of Nahuel Huapi Lake to the North and Moreno lake to the South. The property is located in a 15-hectare land which includes an 18-hole golf course, beach, and more!
Its gastronomy is excellent, we strongly recommend tea time in the Winter Garden or dinner at Asador Criollo, where you will have one of the best lambs you will ever try.
Esquel: Huemules Natural Reserve
Near Esquel and Los Alerces National Park, the private Natural Reserve Los Huemules and it’s amazing Domes are making a good impact in the environment. Before being a Natural Reserve it was an Estancia that for many years, first with the indigenous folks and later with the welsh immigrants, had been used for cattle feeding during the summer months. About some years ago the owners decided to make some changes and believed that that area was important to preserve and shifted to a more sustainable way of managing the lands.
The mountain reserve is now six thousand hectares. It is not a typical hotel since the rooms are Domes. The furniture was constructed with recycled wood, the construction was managed by local people and local companies.
They also sustainably manage waste and have designed an energy system based on the eternal hydrological cycle. They use wood stoves and provide biodegradable bath products. All of these aspects make it even clearer the fact that this amazing hotel deserves to be part of this Patagonia luxury hotels list.
Peninsula Valdes: Estancia Rincón Chico
This exclusive Estancia is located in a privileged place: Peninsula Valdes, the best place to enjoy southern Atlantic wildlife. Depending on the season Dolphins, Penguins, Whales, Sea Lions and more will be your neighbours while you stay here. The Estancia has a great team of bilingual biologists and naturalists that will guide you and explain everything about this magnific place named as Natural Wonder by UNESCO.
This Estancia belongs to the fifth generation of two of the pioneer families that arrived to Peninsula Valdes 120 year ago. This is represented by the architecture of the ranch. There are only two buildings: the hotel and the hosts home. This derives in an exclusive and personalized service.
El Calafate: Eolo
This hotel is in a 4000 hectares property strategically located between the city of El Calafate and Los Glaciares National Park. The view from the rooms will let you confirm why they have as Slogan the words “Patagonia’s Spirit”.
The hotel’s gastronomy is the perfect combination of international cuisine techniques using regional products. Tea and wine selection is excellent.
They offer plenty of activities to do inside the property like trekking, mountain biking, canopy, horseback riding and more! They also offer conventional tours to get to know the area and the famous Perito Moreno Glacier. When we talk about Patagonia luxury hotels in Argentina, Eolo is one of the most popular ones.
Carretera Austral: Puyuhuapi Lodge & Spa
Puyuhuapi Lodge is a dream come true and a must stop when driving the Carretera Austral or Southern Highway. This hotel is located in the Aysen region of the Chilean Patagonia, in a strategic place accessible just by boat in the Chilean Fjords.
Surrounded by exuberant nature the ecolodge offers a great variety of activities to enjoy during your stay. The main attractions are Queulat National Park and the Hot Springs. Queulat means «Sound of Waterfalls» in the Chono people’s language. It preserves Patagonian Andean flora and fauna species. The Hot Springs have three main objectives: disconnection, wellness and adventure. They have 3 different types of water: salted water provided by the Pacific Ocean, the sweet and pure water from the Andes Range and thermal waters emerging from the earth up to 85°C.
Carretera Austral: Puerto Bertrand Lodge BordeBaker
In the shores of Cochrane River, along the Carretera Austral, stands this great Lodge. This lodge is very boutique, it has only 5 rooms and 7 fully equipped cabins with great views of the river.
The restaurant has a great variety of Chilean Cuisine with a strong protagonism of Patagonic and Pacific Ocean components. Also, they have a great selection of Chilean Whines, great services and friendly staff.
They offer different activities such as trekking in, Tamango Park, Patagonia Park, by the Baker and Neff rivers and the fossil observation trekking from Puerto Guadal. Rafting and Canopy are also fun alternatives They also offer Fly Fishing experiences.
Torres del Paine: Eco Camp
If you want extreme contact with nature and be an environmentally responsible traveler, in Torres del Paine, this is our best option. Their management is sustainable in every level; they have eco-friendly policies, green technology, social commitment with the local communities, and cultural preservation. This last thing I mentioned is very important to understand the history of the place and the true meaning to the indigenous cultures that habituated these lands not so long ago.
The accommodation is in individual domes, with four different categories. There is also a Yoga Dome and a massage room. Creating a community and bringing people together is something that makes this place distinctive. They have Community Domes equipped with wood-burning stoves, couches and chairs to share meals and also amazing drinks and Chilean wines.
Torres del Paine: Explora
Explora Hotel is one of our favorites in Torres del Paine. It is located in a strategic spot in the heart of Torres del Paine National Park. Its location is perfect to do plenty of trekking during your stay. Its location is also perfect because you get amazing bedroom views from Paine Massif and the waterfall of Salto Chico.
Its restaurant and bar are a great experience of Chilean cuisine, beverages and of course, wine.
Besides trekking, the hotel offers different activities, being horseback riding one of the most beautiful. They have their stable and 26 horses, which are taken care of by the veterinarian horse specialist Gaela Hourcq, with over 15 yeard of professional experience in prestigious stables around the world.
Ushuaia: Los Cauquenes
This hotel is one of our favorite options in Ushuaia. The southernmost city of Argentina and the capital of Tierra del Fuego Province has many to offer and this hotel is perfect to have the best experience you can have.
Los Cauquenes Resort and Spa is located strategically between the Andes Range and the Beagle Channel. From their bedrooms, you will always have a peaceful and mindblowing view.
Their restaurant combines perfectly the seafood, freshly caught in the beagle channel, and the traditional Patagonic cuisine, like Lamb. They also have a beautiful wine bar with views to the Beagle Channel where you will be able to enjoy distinctive wines. Also, for a special occasion, you can make your reservation in the Akawaia boat, and have dinner or lunch with great views of Ushuaia and different Islands from the Channel.
They also offer excursions to get to know Tierra del Fuego with Los Cauquenes style.
