Argentina and Chile are vast countries with diverse geography that includes everything from the Northern desert to the jungle in Iguazú, as well as the mountains and lakes of Patagonia. This variety provides an extensive array of destinations to discover. Here are our tips to help you get ready for your adventure in the countries.
Our top recommendation is to pack comfortable clothing, as most of your activities will take place outdoors. Comfort is key, so make sure to pack short-sleeve t-shirts, comfortable pants and shorts, as well as a good pair of sneakers. Temperatures can drop at night, be sure to add a sweater or jacket to your packing list. There is no need to bring fancy clothes, since we are very relaxed when it comes to dressing for a night out. For most excursions, remember to bring sunglasses, a cap, sunscreen, and a small backpack for your belongings. A water bottle is always a good idea for any outing!
Patagonia is famous for experiencing all four seasons in a single day, making the weather quite unpredictable. One of the most important tips is to wear your clothes in layers. Three layers will help keep you dry and warm: a base layer for removing moisture, a mid-layer to keep you warm, and an outer layer to protect you from the outside. For your trekking days, you’ll require hiking boots or shoes, thermal underwear, fleece, softshell jacket, parka, trekking pants, over pants, thermal socks, gloves, and a wooly hat.
If your plan includes multi-day hikes, such as the W-Trek in Torres del Paine or trails in El Chaltén, with overnight stays at campsites or refugios, it’s recommended to bring a hiking backpack (40-45 liters). Be sure to protect your gear from rain by using a dry bag, zip-lock bags, or placing a garbage bag inside your pack. Essential clothing includes a Primaloft-style jacket, fleece layer, quick-dry pants, base layers, a waterproof parka, and waterproof pants. You’ll also need comfortable hiking boots, gloves, socks, a buff, UV-protection sunglasses, a sun-shielding hat, a warm coat, and leg warmers. Additionally, don’t forget toiletries, a quick-dry towel, a water bottle, sunscreen, lip balm, mosquito repellent, and a first-aid kit with necessary medications.
While you are exploring the Northwest and the Atacama desert, it’s best to pack light-colored clothing, as the sun in these regions can be quite intense. When visiting Iguazú, be sure to pack a raincoat, flip-flops, and a swimsuit, since most hotels feature pools where you can relax after a day of activities. We also recommend using mosquito repellent and reapplying it every two hours.
