Buenos Aires: a strong culinary center of Latin America. A brief description of it’s best restaurants.
Antique culinary techniques, like “asado”, are the Star Plates in Buenos Aires, but it’s not the only option the best restaurants in Buenos Aires can offer. Since Christopher Columbus arrived in Latin-American Immigration only continued to grow in important cities as Buenos Aires. As a result of this cultural mixture, our gastronomic offer became one of the bests, giving us the title of Iberoamerican Capital of Gastronomy Culture in 2017, by the Iberoamerican Gastronomy Academy.
When traveling is important to get good recommendations about which places are really worthy. And who´s best than a “porteño” that loves food to advise about restaurants.
All the recommendations for the best restaurants in Buenos Aires below are based on the personal opinion of Morena Domsch, from Beyond BA LATAM team. Before starting you should know the order of the list is at random.
1. The Argentine Experience
The Argentine Experience is not a traditional experience. Here you will not only try traditional dishes of Argentina but you will learn how to make your own empanadas while having a glass of a great Malbec. In my opinion, is the best way to embrace de local gastronomic culture. That is why you will find them on many lists of the best restaurants in Buenos Aires. You will go home with new recipes to surprise your family and friends.
2. Don Julio and El Baqueano
Both are different options when choosing Argentinian cuisine. While Don Julio is one of the best traditional “parrillas” in town, El Baqueano offers more exotic options.
Don Julio situated on Palermo, one of the most important gastronomic areas in Buenos Aires where you may find many of the best restaurants in Buenos Aires. Don Julio offers high-quality Aberdeen Angus y Hereford meat, grown in the countryside of Buenos Aires Province. It has won many awards. The most recent one is number 6 on the Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants, chosen every year by an anonymous jury integrated by culinary critics, journalists, and chefs.
On the other hand, we have El Baqueano, number 16th on Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants, whose specialty are alternative meats like Lama or Caiman.
3. La Mar Cebicheria
Located in a beautiful corner of Palermo Hollywood, La Mar is the perfect place to take a break of asado. Their menu stays true to Peruvian flavors, techniques, and ingredients. Ceviche is their Star Plate, but you’ll find high quality on every plate.
4. Mishiguene
The best combination of traditional and new Jewish food accompanied by an extended wine list or great author drinks.
“The basis of our cuisine is the emotional memories of the Jews who fled Eastern Europe, of the Sephardim who were expelled from Spain 500 years ago, of the Mizrahi who have lived in the Middle East since Moses”.
Mishiguene is 18th on the best 50 restaurants in Latin America, for instance, one of the best restaurants in Buenos Aires.
5. Cabaña Las Lilas
Las Lilas is a parrilla situated in Puerto Madero, a modern area of the city that offers great walks along the channel and a beautiful view of Women’s Bridge. The reason why they are on our list of best restaurants in Buenos Aires is that they have high-quality meat. The same owners have one of the most important cattle breeding fields in South America.
6. Il Quotidiano
Great traditional Italian pasta in Palermo Nuevo. There are many options in this area between Las Heras Avenue, República de la India Street, Gral. Libertador Avenue and Jeronimo Salguero Street.
Homemade pasta is the specialty of the house and is prepared on the same day. There are many options like tagliolini, tortelloni, meccheroni, even telephone cable pasta! To accompany they have a great variety of salsas and freshly baked bread.
7. El Cuartito
Since it’s opening in 1934 El Cuartito has been rated one of the best restaurants in Buenos Aires by the local people. It’s a traditional “bodegón” of Corrientes Avenue, a really important street for Buenos Aires culture. Between Esmeralda Street and Callao Avenue, it has the highest number of libraries, theatres, bars and coffee places in Buenos Aires.
8. Síntesis Tapas Asiáticas
A combination of Chinese, Japanese and Taiwanese food is why they chose to call the restaurant “synthesis”. Fresh and carefully chosen ingredients make the difference.
Very simple and intimate restaurant but makes the difference with good service and excellent cuisine.
We hardly recommend you do not arrive without reservation because the restaurant is a victim of its success and the wait is usually long.
9. Sacro Restó
Although Argentina is mostly carnivore, vegan culture is growing rapidly. Even the greatest carnivore would forget about meet when trying Sacro’s gourmet plant-based menu. Its aim is to demystify that vegan food is bland and expensive. With a modern and dynamic atmosphere, the place is perfect for both lunch and dinner.
10. Casa Cavia
From breakfast to dinner they offer a unique menu that is not for basics palates. Casa Cavia is not just a restaurant, it’s a whole experience. The mansion was built in 1923, is a great expression of Buenos Aires Belle Époque. The creative director reunited great Argentinian talents to host the different areas of the house. Restaurant, editorial, florist and design under one roof.
