Fauna Calendar Puerto Madryn / Península Valdés
Even though we can find animals all year long in this region, not all of them stay during the whole year. For this reason, is important to know when to go in order to increase the possibilities of seeing them.
The most popular are the Whales and the Penguins. The Whales that inhabit this region – Southern Right Whale – are rather active on the water surface, curious and playful towards human vessels, and can be seen from June to December (although there is always a possibility of not having an encounter, as it is a natural phenomena). Their preferred location is Península Valdés.
The Penguin season, on the other hand, stretches from September till March, and they stay in different colonies along the coast; the largest is the Punta Tombo Rookery – home to more than 500.000 Magellan penguins.
In spite of being those two the most popular, we still have lots of other animals that are worth to see, such as dark dolphins, killer whales (orcas), elephant seals and sea lions, birds (a large variety, including cormorants), Darwin’s Rhea, Patagonian Mara, Foxes, Guanacos and other land-based species.
