Darwin Camp
This Estancia, once a pivotal hub for the transport of wool and other goods, connected the remote expanses of Patagonia with the Pampas via the estuary. Today, it has been transformed into Darwin Camp-Eco Lodge, combining the authentic Patagonian architecture with top-notch, personalized service. Guests can enjoy four rooms with private bathrooms, full board, and an array of activities that immerse them in the history, adventure, and natural beauty of the area.
Remote location of Darwin Camp
This place is located in the heart of the patagonian steppe, about 7-8 hours from the airport of Comodoro Rivadavia (Province of Chubut), and about 3 hours from Puerto Deseado. Puerto Deseado is a small city in the Atlantic coast (about 3 hours from Comodoro Rivadavia’s airport), which can work as a suitable stop-over, since it’s a great place for wildllife watching and also for Kayaking on the sea-river “Deseado”. Darwin Camp is near the sea-river “Deseado”, but about 2 hours from the sea, which makes it a really remote spot in the middle of the steppe. This results in a very attractive feature for many people!
Following Darwin’s footprints
The diverse and stunning landscapes of this region are as captivating today as they were for Charles Darwin in 1833. Darwin chose this very place to camp, sketch its rich biodiversity, and lay the groundwork for his theory of evolution. The estuary, with its historic canyons and memorable characters, the vast steppe, the breathtaking wilderness of Patagonia, and the rich flora, marine, and steppe fauna, form part of the Estuary’s Intangible Natural Reserve.
Darwin Camp-Eco Lodge offers an unforgettable experience for nature enthusiasts, history buffs, and adventure seekers alike. One of the curiosities of this place, is the big stone that appears in one of the Darwin’s assistant drawing book, which can be visited nowadays in a short walking experience departing from Darwin Camp.
The Darwin Camp Experience
They have restored the former Estancia Cerro del Paso headquarters, which is situated 40 km from the mouth of the Ría Deseado on its southern bank, with great regard for the environment and the aid of ecological technologies. This estancia served as a vital hub for the trade of wool and other goods, bridging the estuary that separated the Pampas from the most remote parts of Patagonia. Now known as Campamento Darwin – Eco Lodge, it combines a luxurious and individualized service with a construction that is distinctly Patagonian: guests may enjoy 4 rooms with private bathrooms, full board, and an abundance of historical, adventurous, and natural activities. The site is truly magnificent.
What to do in Darwin Camp?
Despite the fact that many people just like hanging around enjoying the immensity of the steppe, there is a pool of activities that one can enjoy, for instance: horseback riding, trekking in canyons, wildlife watching (animals from the steppe), kayaking in Deseado river, visiting the Penguin Island near Puerto Deseado (Rockhopper penguins and other species), stargazing, history and culture learning etc..
Darwin Camp has a relaxed dinamic, attended by knowldegable people that invite visitors to learn about the history of the place, and to live the spirit of the steppe. The food is carefully made, highlighting regional products and other homemade food.
Even though the structure is not as sophisticated as in urban areas, the rural and remote location, the surrounding, the coziness of the little house, and the people that work on it, are part of the concept of the “luxury of the simple things of life”.
An average stay of 3-4 nights is recommended.
