Tucked away at the southernmost tip of Argentina, the Sierra Valdivieso Circuit in Tierra del Fuego offers adventurers a truly remote and rugged trekking experience. This challenging and rewarding trek takes hikers through breathtaking landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and some of the most pristine wilderness in Patagonia. We are combining this hike with other spots of Tierra del Fuego, including as well 3 previous nights in Ushuaia, in order to make the perfect balance between the main highlights (National Park Tierra del Fuego, Beagle Channel, and Penguin Rookery – among other attractions) and the Sierra Valdivieso Circuit.
The Sierra Valdivieso Circuit showcases Tierra del Fuego’s diverse ecosystems. Hikers will encounter nothofagus forests, which provide habitat for a variety of bird species and other wildlife. The alpine meadows are adorned with wildflowers, and the higher elevations offer stark, rocky landscapes. This, combined with the Beagle Channel, National Park, and the Penguins, makes all an awesome plan!
Arrival in Ushuaia and transfer to the hotel. Depending on the schedule, we can organize optional activities, or you can just enjoy at leisure! Accommodation in Ushuaia.
During the morning, half day excursion to the National Park Tierra del Fuego, within a small group and against the crowds. We’ll take advantage of our time to visit the main highlights of the Park, including the Lapataia Bay and Acigami Lake. This Park will introduce us to the different ecosystems of Tierra del Fuego, including the sea (Beagle Channel), river, mountains, forests, and peat bog (peatland).
In the afternoon, we’ll navigate in a Catamaran (or a Yacht) on the Beagle Channel toward the lighthouse Les Eclaireurs. On the way, we’ll pass by the Birds & Sea Lions islands. Depending on the tour boat, we’ll disembark (or not) on the Bridget Islands. The navigation takes between 3-4 hours.
Overnight in Ushuaia.
Either in the morning or the afternoon, we’ll join an experience that will introduce us to the incredible penguins of Martillo Island. First, we’ll get a transfer from Ushuaia to Harberton Ranch (90 km, about 1.30 hs). Once at the Ranch, we’ll board a zodiac (small tour boat) and head to Martillo Island in the middle of the Beagle Channel (a couple of minutes away from the ranch, very short navigation). Once at the island, we’ll walk among this beautiful birds for about 1 hour.
The island is home to thousands of penguins, mostly Magellan and Gentoo penguin types. Eventually, a few King Penguins are around. This actvitiy runs from October till March.
Return to Ushuaia through the same way. Some times, a short visit to the ranch is included, since is the oldest ranch in Tierra del Fuego. In total, the whole experience takes about 6 hours.
Accommodation in Ushuaia.
The adventure kicks off with a trek on the Laguna Esmeralda trail, carrying light backpacks as our team transports much of the equipment to the first camp. The journey begins along the path to Laguna Esmeralda and ascends to the Ojo del Albino Glacier for a scenic lunch spot. Equipped with crampons, hikers then cross the glacier and descend into the Beban Valley, where the camp is set up.
• Duration: 8 hours
• Distance: 15 km
• Elevation Gain: 800 m
Following a hearty breakfast, hikers pack up and head towards the Beban Pass. The trail descends through the valley towards the northwest, arriving at Reindeer Bay on Lake Fagnano’s shores. Here, a boat from the Bahía de los Renos complex picks up the group, transporting them to their next destination for two nights and a full day of rest.
• Duration: 10 hours
• Distance: 18 km
• Elevation Gain: 350 m
After a restful night and a complete breakfast, the day involves a boat ride across Lake Fagnano to Bahia Grande, a large bird reserve. This excursion offers views of beaver groves, mountains, and untouched valleys, with a delightful lunch on the lake’s shores. The afternoon is reserved for relaxation and recharging for the next day’s trek, ending with a cozy pizza dinner by the fire.
• Duration: Boat excursion of approximately 4 hours (optional)
Mid-morning departure by boat marks the beginning of the ascent to Paso Valdivieso, passing by beautiful lagoons and waterfalls. From the pass, hikers can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Fagnano, the Andes Mountains, and the Carbajal Valley. The trail then descends south through the Carbajal Valley, leading to the final camping spot sheltered by the subantarctic forest.
• Duration: 8 hours
• Distance: 13.5 km
• Elevation Gain: 600 m
The final day starts early, trekking eastward through the expansive Carbajal Valley. The terrain is mostly flat, making for a steady walk towards the conclusion of the journey on National Route 3 by mid-afternoon.
• Duration: 8 hours
• Distance: 15.5 km
• Elevation Gain: 200 m
