The Paso del Cuadrado is one of the most rugged and remote treks near El Chaltén, offering panoramic views of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and a unique perspective of Mount Fitz Roy from the northwest. It’s an adventure for experienced hikers who are looking to escape the more popular trails and immerse themselves in the wild, untamed side of Patagonia.
Where It Starts
The trail to Paso del Cuadrado begins from Piedra del Fraile, a remote area that serves as a basecamp for more technical ascents and exploratory hikes. To get there, hikers must travel about 16 km north of El Chaltén and then walk a relatively easy 2-hour trail to Piedra del Fraile.
From there, the climb becomes more technical and demanding, requiring good fitness, proper equipment, and ideally the assistance of a local mountain guide.
Trail Overview
- Distance: Approx. 10–12 km round trip from Piedra del Fraile
- Time: Full-day hike (8–10 hours)
- Difficulty: Demanding – suitable for experienced trekkers
- Elevation gain: Around 1,200 meters (3,900 feet)
Trail Description
After leaving Piedra del Fraile, the trail gradually ascends along the Río Eléctrico Valley. The landscape transforms as you pass through forests and glacial moraines, eventually reaching the Glaciar Marconi area. The final stretch toward the pass is steep and often snow-covered, leading to a narrow saddle between rocky peaks.
From the top of the pass, you’ll have a jaw-dropping view of the Patagonian Ice Field, one of the largest ice masses outside the polar regions, and a perspective of Fitz Roy that few travelers ever get to see.
Highlights of Paso del Cuadrado
- Remote, seldom-traveled path
- Glacier and ice field views
- Unique angles of Mount Fitz Roy
- Pristine alpine terrain
