Reserva Los Huemules is a privately protected natural area located just outside of El Chaltén, in Argentine Patagonia. Unlike the more frequented areas of Los Glaciares National Park, this reserve offers a quieter, more curated experience with well-marked trails, diverse ecosystems, and limited visitor access to ensure conservation.
Named after the endangered South Andean deer (huemul), this reserve is ideal for those looking to combine short hikes, unique wildlife, and dramatic landscapes without the crowds.
Where It Is and How to Get There
Los Huemules Reserve is located about 17 km north of El Chaltén, just off Ruta Provincial 41, near the Río Eléctrico. The reserve is easily accessible by car or private transfer and is also the starting point for several treks, including those to Laguna Azul, Laguna Diablo, Refugio Puesto Cagliero, and Laguna del Diablo.
- Distance from El Chaltén: ~30 minutes by car
- Access: Entry fee required; registration at the entrance
- Open season: October to April
Hiking in the Reserve
The trail network in the reserve is thoughtfully laid out, offering several options from easy walks to more demanding day hikes. All trails are clearly signed, and each leads to incredible viewpoints, lakes, or glaciers.
Notable Trails
- Laguna Azul: A calm and photogenic lagoon surrounded by lenga forests
- Laguna Diablo: A turquoise lake with views of Cerro Neumayer
- Glaciar Cagliero: Accessible via an adventure route (via ferrata and guide required)
- Refugio Puesto Cagliero: Rustic mountain lodging with views of the glacier
Why It’s Special
- Wildlife spotting: Home to condors, foxes, woodpeckers, and (if lucky) the elusive huemul
- Conservation focus: The reserve aims to protect native forests and species
- Low foot traffic: Visitor numbers are limited to preserve tranquility and reduce impact
- Photographic opportunities: Great light, dramatic peaks, and reflections on still water
Tips for Visiting
- Bring cash for the entrance fee (probably to be booked in advance).
- Pack snacks and water—there are no restaurants or shops on-site
- Start early to maximize daylight and enjoy solitude on the trails
- Dress in layers, and bring sun and wind protection
