The Base of the Towers hike (also known as Mirador Las Torres) is the most iconic trail in Torres del Paine National Park. It leads to the base of the park’s famous granite towers, rising dramatically above a turquoise glacial lake. For many visitors, this is the ultimate reward after a challenging trek and the highlight of their time in Patagonia.
Where the Trail Begins
The hike starts from the Hotel Las Torres or Refugio Torre Central in the Las Torres Sector, located in the eastern area of the park. It’s also the starting (or ending) point of the W Trek, so many travelers incorporate it into a multi-day itinerary.
- Nearest Access: Laguna Amarga entrance to the park
- Accommodation Nearby: Refugio Torre Central, Refugio Torre Norte, Hotel Las Torres, EcoCamp Patagonia
- You can also do this hike from Puerto Natales, in a full day excursion.
Trail Overview
- Total Distance: About 20 km (12.4 mi) round trip
- Duration: 7 to 9 hours
- Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous
- Elevation Gain: Around 900 meters (2,950 feet)
The hike can be done as a challenging full-day trek, or as part of a longer W Trek itinerary. It’s essential to start early and bring enough food and water, as there are no services on the trail after the first few kilometers.
Trail Description
The first section follows a steep incline through open fields and forests, with views of the Ascencio River Valley. After crossing a hanging bridge, the trail climbs gradually through native lenga forest.
The final hour is the most demanding: a rocky moraine ascent that requires careful footing and determination. But the reward is unforgettable—a glacial lagoon at the foot of the three Torres, glowing golden at sunrise or standing starkly majestic against the midday sky.
Highlights Along the Trail
- Breathtaking views of the Ascencio Valley
- Native forests full of birdsong
- Refugio Chileno: a shelter (half way to the Base of the Towers) where people can overnight -within the W trek- and where you can find a snack-bar to have something to drink and eat. There is an awesome deck with amazing views!
- A wild, rugged landscape with panoramic viewpoints
- The towering granite spires reflecting in a glacial lake
Best Time to Go
The ideal season is from late October to early April, when weather conditions are more favorable. However, this trail is exposed to wind and sudden weather shifts, so hikers should be well-equipped for all conditions—even in summer.
Tips for Hikers
- Start early—sunrise at the base is magical and avoids the crowds
- Pack windproof gear, even on sunny days
- Bring snacks, water, and trekking poles
- Allow time for breaks, especially on the final ascent
Final Thoughts
The Base of the Towers hike is a physical and emotional journey, culminating in one of Patagonia’s most awe-inspiring views. Whether you reach it at dawn, noon, or late afternoon, standing beneath the towers is a moment that stays with you long after you leave.
