5 Travel Ideas for Low Season in Patagonia
Sometimes is easy to plan a journey to Patagonia between October and March (high season), when the weather conditions are ideal to explore most of the very well known attractions; but let´s check some other amazing things that you can do during April and September, that will definitely help you create another perspective about this region:
1. Winter in Torres del Paine: unexpected encounters with Pumas
Enjoy the beauty of the main pearl of Chilean Patagonia, during the time of the year when it´s less visited.
During this 5 days Experience, we will be able to combine the comfort of one of the most exclusive Patagonian Lodges, with the sensation of being fully connected with Nature.
Within the frame of an outstanding environment, and guided by our most experimented Puma trackers, we will follow the footprints of the most legendary big cat in Patagonia.
We will learn about their habits and preferences, and also the role that the different animals play in the Patagonian ecosystem. The fauna in Torres del Paine is composed of different interesting animals, such as Guanacos, Condors, Huemuls, Rheas, a big variety of birds, etc.
The chance of having a close encounter with Pumas is very high, as this experience takes place in autumn-winter, when the human presence is rare.
2. Heli-skiing in Ushuaia
Beyond BA LATAM offers you the opportunity of being at the top of the Andes Range, in a paradise of untouched powder snow, contemplating the majestic scenery around you, and breathing the fresh air of the Mountains. Having the chance of going down the slope, enjoying the adrenaline that comes out of being gliding through the valleys, surrounded by the sounds of silence at the End of the World.
During this experience (that can be of half or full day), we will be able to do Heliskiing/boarding in the surroundings of Ushuaia, latitude 54 degrees, where the snow conditions are ideal and the season extends as in just a few parts of the world.
The descents are between 2000 and 3000 meters, and once at the bottom, the helicopter will take us to the next mountain, where we will start another adventure until complete 3 runs (half day).
We will be guided by Ski/Snowboard instructors and the most experienced pilots.
3. Whales Watching in Península Valdés
Even though the best time to go to Península Valdés (if you would like to find as many animals as possible) is between september and november, the season for whales starts in June, which gives you the possibility of watching them in a less crowded atmosphere:
We depart early in the morning towards the Provincial Wildlife Reserve Peninsula Valdes, UNESCO World Heritage Site. Already in the Reserve, we will lead to Puerto Pirámides, where we will start our navigation to see the Southern Right Whales:
We will sail in the Gulf, having the possibility of observing also cormorant colonies –with their nests against the cliff- and other bird species. Once the tour boat is far enough from the coast (about 1-2 miles), the Captain will stop the engine and the silence will give place to the sounds of the nature: cormorants, seagulls…while we wait for the encounter with the cetaceans. All of a sudden, the massive body of one or more Whales splashes in the sea and the show performed by the nature starts…
4. Autumn in the Lakes Region
The lake district has one of the most varied landscapes in Patagonia, due to the number of lakes, rivers, lagoons and rich flora present in the area. During the autumn time, the different trees turn into many intense colors, that goes from light brown to red, yellow or orange, making the “wow” factor present at any time. Our suggestion for this time of the year, is to rent a vehicle and drive the “7 Lakes Road”, from Bariloche to San Martín de Los Andes, and delight yourself with the magical views around you.
5. Winter Sports in the Lakes District and Ushuaia
This is the “high season” between April and September. Spread along different areas in the Andes Range, the centers for winter sports are the perfect choice for those who want to combine outdoor activities with outstanding landscapes.
From the Cathedral Hill in Bariloche, to Cerro Castor in Ushuaia, the well maintained pistes, the quality of the snow, and the magnificent views in the surrounding, are complemented by the facilities and comfort required by all kinds of travelers, including luxury lodges with easy access to the hills.
