Located in the far south of Argentina, right on the border with Chile, Pali Aike National Park is one of Patagonia’s most surreal and least visited landscapes. Often compared to a lunar or Martian terrain, this volcanic plateau in the province of Santa Cruz offers a glimpse into the primal forces that shaped the region.
Its name, meaning “desolate place of the devil” in the Aónikenk language (the indigenous Tehuelche people), perfectly captures the eerie beauty of this remote land.
A Volcanic World Untouched by Time
Pali Aike is a geological wonder. The park is dotted with basaltic lava fields, cinder cones, and ancient volcanic craters. Walking its trails feels like exploring another planet—dark rocks, twisted formations, and a vast, windswept silence.
Key highlights include:
- Pali Aike Crater: The park’s main hike, a trail that takes you into a collapsed volcanic cone
- Cueva de los Hombres (Cave of the Men): Archaeological site with evidence of human presence dating back over 10,000 years
- Wildlife sightings: Guanacos, Darwin’s rheas (ñandúes), armadillos, and a variety of Patagonian birds
A Spiritual and Historical Landscape
This land was sacred to the indigenous Aónikenk people, who viewed its volcanoes and caves as entrances to other worlds. Today, the stillness and solitude of Pali Aike inspire a similar sense of awe.
Road Trip Tip: Connecting the Southern Wilds
Though isolated, Pali Aike is part of an epic southern Patagonian road trip, especially for those entering or exiting Argentina via Chile.
Getting There
