Jujuy Trekking – from Tilcara to Calilegua

Departing from Tilcara, we make our way to San Francisco de Alfarcito, crossing the rocky place known as Garganta del Diablo. Our journey by car leads us to Quebrada Seca (3100 m), where we start ascending, relishing magnificent vistas of the Quebrada de Humahuaca with its captivating formations and colors. Along our path, we encounter a ravine, gradually gaining altitude until reaching Abra de la Cruz (4200m) and the viewpoint of Cerro Naranjo (5030 m). Descending from there, we arrive at the Huaira Huasi area, where we establish our first camp within mountain ranches. Here, we bask in incredible views of the Tilcara Valley.

After breakfast, we prepare our backpacks and descend to El Molulo via the Huaira Huasi River until we reach a rocky edge. Here, our tasty lunch combines with marveling at the surrounding hills. After the meal, we continue hiking for two hours, culminating in our arrival at El Molulo, where we set up camp near the local community. El Molulo is a small community located at 80 km from Tilcara and the only way to get there is walking or by horse.

As the sun rises, we fuel ourselves with a good breakfast and prepare for a challenging expedition. Our ascent takes us along the rugged mountain edges until we reach Abra del Potrero. Before reaching the steep climb to the red rock formation, we pause for a well-deserved lunch and some rest. The path ahead demands our utmost effort as we navigate through the dense jungle, steadily ascending to the pinnacle of the rock.

From there, we embark on a descent, tracing our way to the picturesque town of San Lucas, where we will spend our final night. This part of Jujuy trekking reaches an approximate altitude of 1865 meters over the sea level.

As we say goodbye to the charming town of San Lucas, our expedition continues through the Calilegua National Park. Following a path that runs parallel to the San Lucas River, we are guided to a spectacle of waterfalls cascading down rock masses. Crossing the San Lucas River, we go on the final ascent towards San Francisco, our ultimate destination. Here, our transfer will take us to either San Salvador de Jujuy or Salta City, marking the end of this unforgettable journey.
