5 experiences you can enjoy in Salta & Jujuy
1. Staying in a Vineyard in Cafayate
This pearl at the top of the Calchaquíes Valleys, at the end south of Salta’s province, has the ideal conditions to grow the grapes of the famous “Torrontés” White Wine of Argentina. Surrounded by vineyards and with the andes range at your back, don´t miss out the chance of enjoying a sunset at one of its Wine Lodges.
2. Going on a crossing to the Puna
Either if you want to cross to Chile, or if you just want to explore what is like to be over 4000 meters above the sea level, its landscapes have a hypnotizing effect. Even though the Altiplano covers an extensive area, one of the most traditional ways to go (in Salta & Juju) is along the road next to the “Train to the Clouds” track, which leads to Viaducto La Polvorilla, a bridge (train track) over 4250 mts. In the same area, you have parts of the legendary Road 40, with ancient volcanoes that stand still for ages, in the loneliness of the Andean Plateau.
3. Walking from Iruya to San Isidro de Iruya
Apart from being an attraction itself, Iruya (80 km northeast Humahuaca) has a neighbor village, small and remote, where the electricity came only 6 years ago: San Isidro de Iruya. This precious settlement can be reached after a 2 hours walk from Iruya, through an impressive gorge with a river and a couple of interesting trees lost along the way.
4. Counting the colors and admiring the rock shapes at Humahuaca’s, de las Conchas & de las Flechas Gorges
From Purmamarca to Humahuaca, passing by Tilcara, Uquía, Maimará, and many other incredible places, Quebrada de Humahuaca is full of colors. Apart from the iconic Hill of 7 Colors, this gorge is plenty of other hills that have strong contrasts. There is even one hill with more colors and contrasts than the 7 Colors one: El Hornacal.
The other two gorges are connected in the area of the Calchaquíes Valleys, and their main highlights are the Anfiteatro and Garganta del Diablo in Quebrada de las Conchas, and the moon like landscapes along the way in Quebrada de las Flechas.
5. Descending (or Ascending) the Cuesta del Obispo or Cuesta de Lipán
If you want to feel what is like to go beyond the clouds in just a few kilometers, don´t miss out this chance of going from the Valleys to the Andean Plateau, through landscapes that change drastically in less (usually) than a 2 hours drive.
6. Tasting the local Empanadas
Those homemade yummy pies are a blessing for every taste. With a unique filling that sets a difference with the rest of Empanadas in Argentina –including potatoes among their ingredients-, these ones hide a secret recipe that can be discovered only there 🙂
We invite you to discover this region through one of our selected tours to Salta & Jujuy, which can be customized according your needs and preferences.
Will be our pleasure to help you plan your next trip to South America!
