Great Places to Navigate in Argentina & Chile
Rivers, lakes, channels, gulfs, bays, fjords … Argentina and Chile are plenty of amazing places to be discovered by sailing, kayaking, or navigating.
Chilean Fjords
Even though the Fjords occupy a vast area in Chilean Patagonia, the most visited ones are in the route between Punta Arenas (southernmost continental city in Chile) and Ushuaia (Southernmost tip in Argentina). On board a comfortable cruise ship, you can explore them and visit legendary places such as Cape Horn. These navigations take place in summer time (southern hemisphere), and it usually takes 3 nights to join both ends.
Beagle Channel
A great complement for the overland excursions in Ushuaia. The lighthouse lost on the way is a wonderful postcard, as it’s as well the birds and sea lions islands with the city behind. If you visit the region between November and March, don’t miss your chances of extending your navigation to Isla Martillo, a small island inhabited by sympathetic Magellan Penguins!

Glaciers of Patagonia
Even though Perito Moreno Glacier is a spectacular Glacier, is not the only one. El Calafate, El Chaltén, and Torres del Paine, are full of other impressive glaciers as well. And navigating is a great way to explore them.
From full day excursions to 1-2 night experiences, you can get the chance of seeing glaciers such as the Upsala and the Spegazzini, the largest and highest in the region, respectively.
Lakes Carrera & Buenos Aires
Lost in the middle of Patagonia, the largest lake in South America hides an amazing secret: the Marble Cathedrals (Chilean Side). This is a network of water-filled marble caves formed over vast stretches of time.
Due to the impact of the water over the years, you can see how the walls of marble medallions (and other minerals) have developed different tones, white, pink, blue… that in combination creates a spectacular effect to the view!

Lakes District
The name itself can give you an idea of what you can find in this region. With Bariloche (Argentinean side) and Puerto Montt (Chilean side) as the main cities, this area is full lakes, rivers, forests, villages, and spectacular mountain views. Considered as the “Switzerland” of South America, the alternatives for navigations are uncountable. Some of the most popular ones are the “Isla Victoria & Bosque de Arrayanes” excursion, or the Lakes Crossing Excursion (from Bariloche to Puerto Montt, or vice versa, through the lakes).
Wild life, Whales and Penguins
The best place to see Ocean Wild Life in Argentina is Península Valdés. A great thing about this place is that you don’t necessarily have to navigate to see whales and penguins, although you can get pretty close to the cetaceans if you go on a navigation excursion from Puerto Pirámides (the Southern Right Whale is a very sociable animal). The season goes from June to November.
From Peninsula Valdes you can also go to Punta Tombo, the largest penguin rookery in South America, with hundreds of thousands individuals going around every season from October to March.
On the other end, and apart from the Beagle Channel, from Punta Arenas (Chile) you can navigate to Isla Magdalena (penguin colony), and also to other parts of the Fjords, such as the Park Francisco Coloane, where you can find the Humpback Whale.
Península Valdés
Iguazu Falls & Ibera Wetlands
The littoral of Argentina offers another kind of landscape, and together with it, another kind of experience. If you are visiting the Falls, going on the adventurous navigation on the Devil’s Canyon is a must: you can approach the falls in a very singular way, being baptized by their waters.
Ibera Wetlands, in the province of Corrientes, is considered as the “Pantanal” of Argentina, where there you can navigate on the Laguna Ibera, seeing all kinds of birds, capybaras, caimans, and other animals. The sunsets over the lagoon are just unforgettable.
Tigre Delta & Rio de la Plata
A classic in Buenos Aires, Tigre Delta can be explored in many different ways, from getting lost in one of its thousand islands on a private boat, to visiting the main highlights in a regular excursion. On the other hand, crossing the Río de la Plata on a ferry towards Uruguay, is a nice experience to get out of the city and to visit some picturesque places such as Carmelo or Colonia.
