Argentina’s Capital City has been named Ibero American Capital of Gastronomy 2017
The authorities of the tourist board, together with the Gastronomical associations of Ibero America, announced that Buenos Aires has been designated “Ibero-American capital of Gastronomic Culture 2017”, in recognition of its importance as a culinary center.
The announcement took place in “Usina de Arte” (Cultural Center in La Boca’s neighborhood), with the presence of Horacio Rodríguez Larreta (city mayor), Diego Santilli (deputy), Rafael Anson (President of the Ibero American Academy of Gastronomy), and María Podestá (President of the Argentine Academy of Gastronomy), among many other representatives from the food and tourism industry.
The mayor said: “The designation of Buenos Aires as the Ibero-American capital of gastronomy is fitting and timely,” recognizing how important is the role of gastronomy in the city’s economic growth.
The Minister for Tourism, also quoted: “This distinction is a huge opportunity to promote tourism in the city, to promote our products, our work and our country.”
The distinction highlights the importance of Buenos Aires as a gastronomic hub. The Ibero-American Academy of Gastronomy awards the title to cities whose gastronomy boast both strong historic tradition and a forward-looking dynamism and creativity, something which perfectly describes the current culinary scene in Buenos Aires, where closed-door restaurants share space with traditional grills and pasta restaurants.
Buenos Aires has been always associated to “parrillas” (barbecue grill restaurants), steaks, pizza and pasta; but since the last years, this concept has been changing: a mix of international influences its gaining place, such as Armenian, Taiwanese or Peruvian cuisines.
A large number of gastronomic events accompany this success, such as the BA Food Week, the Buenos Aires Market, or La Marché (French food festival).
