Patagonia is a region full of contrasts. Glaciers, rivers, mountains, and forests give the Andean Cordillera a unique perspective. Torres del Paine is proof of it. The wildlife rises as the perfect companion to the natural beauties that exist on it, giving the Puma the throne of the Animal Kingdom.
Then, on the other side of the steppe, the Atlantic Ocean exhibits another kind of beauty. The beauty of immensity. This Kingdom has other rules, but it still being something in common: someone is at the top. The throne here is for the Orca (Killer Whale). But they’re not the only ones. Different species gather every year to breed and reproduce, and in that way to continue with the natural legacy. On this trip, we will combine Orca Whale Watching with a Puma Tracking tour. Let’s to it together!
Transfer from the international airport to the domestic airport in Buenos. We’ll fly then from Buenos Aires to Trelew. Upon arrival, we’ll head to Puerto Madryn, where we’ll stay for the night.
We depart early in the morning towards the Wildlife Reserve Peninsula Valdes, UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. After a one-hour drive, we arrive in Puerto Piramides (during June to November there you can see southern right whales, but not in march). Next, we continue our journey to Estancia San Lorenzo, a traditional sheep farm, where we can taste a spectacular lamb barbecue for lunch (not included). After lunch, we walk among penguins in a stunning Magellanic penguin colony with about 500.000 penguins located 7 km/4,35 miles from the main house. Our next stop is the Wildlife Reserve Punta Norte, we can see Southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina), Southern sea lions (Otaria flavescens), and eventually orca (today; tomorrow we’ll invest our day to find orcas – killer whales). Finally, we leave for Punta Cantor to observe Caleta Valdes, a large inlet that stretches along the peninsula’s Atlantic coastline. On the way back, we have our drop off in the village of Puerto Pirámides, right inside the Peninsula Valdés. Along the way, we may run into wild rheas (ostriches), tinamous, guanacos, foxes, cavies, petrels, and armadillos. We’ll stay in Puerto Pirámides.
We’ll invest this day, in a private tour, to look for Orcas. They come to the shore to attack and eat baby sea lions (this is probably the only place in the continent where they use this technique). Even though the peak season for orcas is 15 days, the right season is March (between ends of march and the beginning of April). Every year is guaranteed that you see them a lot of times but is not guaranteed that it will happen exactly at the moment you’re there, as it’s a natural phenomenon. The key is to reach when the tide is high since it allows the Orcas to reach the shore. We return to Puerto Madryn and stay there.
Today we will head to Trelew and board a flight to El Calafate, gate to our next adventure. Overnight in El Calafate
Today we’ll go to Puerto Natales (Chile), which is about 4 hours away from El Calafate. There, we’ll meet our guide, a Puma tracker, who will give us a technical talk and introduce us to the Puma tracking tour. Overnight in Puerto Natales.
