It’s difficult to set a definition for the “best Patagonia itinerary” for 3 weeks, because there is plenty of beautiful landscapes and destinations to visit, usually within a limited time frame.
The following sample is one of the itineraries that aims to provide an approach to the many different faces of Patagonia: the ocean wildlife in Peninsula Valdes, the end of the world in Ushuaia, the Glaciers and spectacular views of Fitz Roy, Torres del Paine, and Perito Moreno, and the picturesque landscapes of the Lakes district. On the other hand, combining patagonia with a visit to the Iguazu Falls, is a suitable match to give your trip a fabulouss ending.
Arrival in Buenos Aires and transfer to your hotel. In the afternoon, private city tour to visit the main highlights of the Buenos Aires. Reference map (flexible itinerary):
At an agreed upon time, transfer to the airport and flight to Trelew. Arrival in Trelew and transfer to your hotel in Puerto Madryn.
We will visit the Provincial Wildlife Reserve Peninsula Valdes, UNESCO World Heritage Site.
After a one-hour drive we arrive in Puerto Piramides, where we take a boat tour to do whale watching of Southern Right Whales (Eubalaena australis). We continue our excursion driving to Estancia San Lorenzo, a traditional sheep farm, where apart from the possibility to have a spectacular lamb barbecue for lunch, we visit a stunning Magellanic penguin colony.
We visit as well the Wildlife Reserve Punta Norte, where we can find Sea lions and eventually orcas. We head then towards Punta Cantor to observe elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) and Caleta Valdes, a large inlet that stretches along the peninsula’s Atlantic coastline. On the way back, we make a stop at the Visitor Centre located at the Isthmus Carlos Ameghino.
Along the way we have good chances of viewing other animals such as guanacos, rheas, foxes, cavies, armadillos and skunks, among others.
NOTICE: the Penguins are from October till March, whereas the Whales are from June till ends of November/beggining of december. Patagonia itinerary-day 3.
Transfer to the airport in Trelew and flight to Ushuaia. Arrival and transfer to your lodge.
Patagonia itinerary-day 4.
Today, we will visit one of the Ushuaias classics in the best possible way: in a small group and against the crowds.Throughout the excursion we are closely in touch with nature and the tranquility that it conveys. We stroll along the principal and most important trails in the National Park, which are of low difficulty.
In half a day we would’ve walked enough to have a special and unique impression of the fuegian ecosystem. Our well trained guides will pass on to you all of their experience and passion for this surroundings giving away a once in a lifetime experience. Lapataia Bay, Roca Lake and Ensenada Bay will be the southern spots we will introduce you to during this unforgettable excursion.
Optional: those who like enjoying the nature in a more relaxed way, have the option of getting a 7 km (1 hour) ride on board of the End of the World Train (Tren del Fin del Mundo). The southernmost (and former prisoner’s train) rail-way in the world, recreates its historic journey.
In the afternoon, we’ll go on a navigation along the Beagle Channel, on a Yacht up to 25 people, visiting the light house, sea lion island, bird island and walking on Bridges Island. Along the trip we share a snack, which includes tea, warm chocolate, coffee, biscuits and, of course, the typical Argentinian Mate.
Patagonia itinerary-day 5.
Today, we can opt for one of the following experiences (among some other ones) in Tierra del Fuego:
– Lakes Fagnano and Escondido: offroad and canoeing adventure, with lunch in a private shelter.
– Crab fishing and gourmet lunch in a remote fishing village next to the Beagle Channel.
– Cape San Pablo and Estancia Rolito: a trip to the steppe and the open sea, crossing the andean cordillera.
– Estancia Harberton and Isla Martillo: penguins and culture.
Patagonia itinerary-day 6.
Transfer to the airport in Ushuaia and flight to El Calafate. Arrival and transfer to your hotel.
Patagonia itinerary for 3 weeks-day 7.
After breakfast, we will go on our excursion to the impressive Perito Moreno Glacier.
We will cross the Rico Branch on a boat and after walking through the exhuberant Magellanic forest we will reach the southern wall of the glacier. We will walk on top of the glacier with our expert guides for around 2 hours.
We will navigate back to the other side of the lake, and we will head then to the traditional walkways: get ready to enjoy one of the most spectacular views of Patagonia.
Return to El Calafate.
Patagonia itinerary -day 8.
After breakfast, we will head to El Chalten, located at the foot of the mythical Mount Fitz Roy, still one of the most beautiful sights and a must for travelers that visit southern Patagonia.
To arrive to El Chalten we travel about 220 km from El Calafate, we take the mythic route 40 and then the route 23 enjoying wonderful impressions of the Patagonian steppe, along the Rio La Leona surrounded by the Lakes Argentino and Viedma, Viedma Glacier, and always keeping in the view the mountain range, we arrive at this magnificent tourist village where you will enjoy a fascinating experience.
El Chalten is an ideal place to practice trekking, especially as we approach Fitz Roy (Chalten), Cerro Torre, the glaciers Torre and the lagoons Capri, Torre and De los Tres among many other, incredibly beautiful places.
Our menu of activities will allow all kinds of passengers to enjoy this fascinating place, regardless of their previous experience or age. The treks may be done independently using the autoguided paths or with our guides.
Overnight in El Chaltén, and return to Calafate on the next day.
Patagonia itinerary for 3 weeks-days 9 & 10.
Today, we will navigate across the northern side of Lake Argentino, until reach the Upsala Channel, where we will see a spectacular ice-barrier. From there we will have a panoramic view of the Glacier Upsala.
We will also navigate on the Spegazzini Chanel, where we will be able to see the Glacier Seco, and then
the Glacier Spegazzini, which is the highest in the National Park Los Glaciares.
Patagonia itinerary-day 11.
We will head to one of the greatest treasures of Chilean Patagonia: Torres del Paine.
We will visit the lookout points of Lago Sarmiento, Laguna Amarga, Cascada Paine (Salto Grande), Lago Nordenskjöld, Mirador Pehoé (above the hostería), and Cascada Paine zone (again) where you can do an easy autoguided trek of about 1:30 hs return. We will go in a 4×4 big comfortable truck, with a shorter driving time than other alternatives, as it takes (in part) the old route number 40.
Overnight in Torres del Paine.
Patagonia itinerary-day 12.
Today, we will travel from Torres del Paine to Puerto Natales in a non conventional way: through the navigation that leads to the Glaciers Balmaceda and Serrano.
On the way, we’ll have lunch at an Estancia and enjoy the several views of this part of Patagonia. Upon your arrival in Puerto Natales, we’ll connect with a bus to Punta Arenas (3 hours down south), in order to spend the night and get ready for our flight on the next day.
Patagonia itinerary-day 13.
Transfer to the airport in Punta Arenas, and flight to Puerto Montt. Arrival in Puerto Montt and transfer to your hotel in Puerto Varas.
Patagonia itinerary-day 14.
The Cruce Andino, the mythical road through the Lagos andinos Patagónicos (Andean Patagonian Lakes,) which joins Argentina and Chile. Through it, the native huilliches and mapuches traveled for over four centuries, leaving their mark on the legends of the area and a history that is coming back to life throughout this trip. The Cruce Andino gives us the chance to live out a once-in-a-lifetime moment, surrounded by awe-inspiring scenery.
Arrival in Bariloche.
Patagonia itinerary-day 15.
Tronador is the highest peak in the Nahuel Huapi National Park. We will see how the lakes, vegetation,hanging glaciers and snowdrifts have ornamented this Mount for thousands of years.
We pass by Lakes Gutierrez and Mascardi, the upper Manso River, Pampa Linda, the valleys of Vuriloches and the Glaciar Negro. We head then towards the Tonador Mt, where its beautiful views will delight us.
Patagonia itinerary for 3 weeks-day 16.
Today, we will go through the Lakes region, getting astonished by the amazing views along the way !
We travel along the RN 40 until we reach the Route 231, where we head west. Some stretches of the road skirts the Lake Nahuel Huapi, revealing the Cerro Cathedral in the background.
After passing by Puerto Manzano, we reach Villa La Angostura, a true mountain village, characterized by its meticulous and clean architecture. A few miles away, the 7 lakes road starts: lakes Espejo, Escondido, Villarino, Falkner, Hermoso and Machonico, are just part of the beautiful landscape that remarks this region.
Once we reach San Martin de los Andes, on the shore of Lake Lacar , we will be able to explore the city and the main street. We return to Bariloche along the same path, or along Junin de los Andes road, according to the conditions of the road.
Patagonia itinerary-day 17.
In the morning, we will visit the main highlights of Bariloches surroundings, enjoying some of the greatests views of the region, such as those from Cerro Campanario or the views to Llao Llao.
Transfer to the airport, and flight to Puerto Iguazu (via Buenos Aires). Arrival in Iguazu and transfer to the hotel.
End of the Patagonia itinerary for 3 weeks.
We will go on a visit to the Iguazu National Park, where we will be able to approach, see and feel most of the jumps (with the Devil’s Throat as the pearl of the Park) in a very near way.
There, we will walk along the 3 different circuits: Upper Circuit, Lower Circuit and Devil Throat´s. During this day, an adventurous excursion will take part in our journey as well: “The Great Adventure”, in which we’ll navigate the Lower Iguazu River, heading towards the waterfalls area.
Return to Puerto Iguazu.
In the morning, we will visit the Brazilian side of the Falls, with its different views.
At an agreed-upon time, transfer to the airport and flight to Buenos Aires. Arrival in Buenos Aires and transfer to the hotel.
Transfer to the airport to board the flight back home, with a backpack full of great memories!
