When you think of Argentina, your mind probably goes to juicy steaks, Malbec wine, and tango. But if you’re wandering through the streets of Buenos Aires and notice crowds spilling out of corner pizzerias, you’re witnessing another local obsession: Argentine pizza. With thick crusts, absurdly generous layers of mozzarella, and a culture all its own, pizza here has evolved into something entirely unique — and delicious.
A Brief Intro to Argentine Pizza
Heavily influenced by Italian immigrants, Argentina developed a style of pizza that is unmistakably local. The crust is bready but not too airy, and the cheese… well, it’s on a mission to defy gravity. Many locals consider two slices more than enough for a meal, especially if you order the classic “muzza” (short for mozzarella).
But there’s more: this is also the land of fugazzeta, a glorious onion-and-cheese pizza that’s sometimes stuffed with even more cheese. It’s comfort food turned sacred ritual.
Let’s explore some of the most iconic pizzerias in Buenos Aires — places where you can bite into tradition with every cheesy mouthful.
Las Cuartetas
Address: Av. Corrientes 838, Microcentro, Buenos Aires
This legendary pizzeria has been serving thick, gooey slices since 1932. The atmosphere is pure porteño chaos: loud, fast-paced, and always full. Grab a standing spot at the bar if you can, and don’t miss their classic mozzarella pizza with a crispy base and rivers of cheese.
Güerrin
Address: Av. Corrientes 1368, Microcentro, Buenos Aires
Possibly the most famous pizzeria in Argentina, Güerrin is a rite of passage. Founded in 1932, it’s known for both its mozzarella and its fugazzeta.
You’ll find locals standing at the marble counters scarfing down slices with fainá (a chickpea flatbread) on top. Yes, fainá + pizza is a thing here — and it works.
El Cuartito
Address: Talcahuano 937, Recoleta, Buenos Aires
Dating back to 1934, El Cuartito keeps it old-school: checkered floors, soccer posters, and enormous slices of muzza or napolitana (mozzarella with tomato slices and garlic). Their fugazzeta is also excellent, and it’s a bit less chaotic than Corrientes Avenue staples.
Banchero
Address: Corrientes 1300, Microcentro, Buenos Aires
This is the birthplace of fugazza and fugazzeta, created by Don Agustín Banchero. Their fugazzeta rellena (stuffed with mozzarella and topped with onions) is an icon. The original La Boca location is the most atmospheric, right near Caminito.
La Mezzetta
Address: Av. Álvarez Thomas 1321, Villa Ortúzar, Buenos Aires
Tiny, fast, and legendary. La Mezzetta was featured on Netflix’s “Best Pizza” episode thanks to its absurdly cheesy fugazzetta rellena. Standing room only — and that’s part of the fun. The melted cheese overflows the crust and onto the pan, giving you that golden, crispy edge.
Imperio de la Pizza
Address: Av. Corrientes 6895, Chacarita, Buenos Aires
This neighborhood gem has a massive following. It’s less touristy than downtown pizzerias, and their muzza is spot on: thick, hot, and molten. The fugazzeta here is a big competitor of La Mezzetta (some people find it even better).
How to Order Pizza in Argentina, Like a Local
• “Una muzza, porción.” = One slice of mozzarella pizza.
• “Con fainá” = Add a slice of chickpea flatbread on top.
• Two slices is usually enough unless you’re really hungry.
• Stand at the barra (counter) if you’re in a rush — it’s faster and more authentic.
If you’re doing a Buenos Aires food tour, you can easily build your own pizza crawl down Avenida Corrientes — from Güerrin to Las Cuartetas, and beyond. Just make sure to bring your appetite… and maybe a napkin or two.
Other types of Pizzas in Argentina
Thick-crust pizzas aren’t the only stars of the show. You can also find famous thin-crust options, like those served at Los Inmortales (it has different branches located across the city) a classic spot in the heart of Buenos Aires.
And if you’re craving more traditional Italian-style pizza, head to Ti Amo — a Napolitan pizzeria located in the neighborhood of Adrogué, on the outskirts of the city. It was recently recognized as one of the best pizzerias in the world.
