The Gentle Giant of Atlantic Patagonia
The Southern Right Whale is one of the most captivating marine animals you can encounter along Argentina’s Atlantic coast. Known for its graceful movements and playful displays, this gentle giant migrates to Argentina’s waters every year to mate and give birth, creating an unforgettable experience for wildlife enthusiasts and travelers. Let’s explore what makes the Southern Right Whale so special, where you can see it in Argentina, and why Peninsula Valdés is one of the best places in the world for whale watching. We invite you to explore also our article about Whale Watching in Patagonia.
Characteristics and Behavior of the Southern Right Whale
The Southern Right Whale, scientifically known as Eubalaena australis, is a baleen whale known for its distinctive appearance and unique behaviors:
- Size and Appearance: Southern Right Whales can grow up to 16 meters long and weigh around 40 tons. They have a robust, round body and a broad back without a dorsal fin. The large, white callosities (rough patches of skin) on their heads are unique to each whale, much like fingerprints, and make it easier to identify individuals.
- Behavior and Breaching: Known for their playful and acrobatic displays, these whales often breach the water, launching their bodies into the air and making a huge splash as they land. They’re also famous for “sailing” with their flukes, holding their tail fins above the water and catching the wind.
- Communication: Southern Right Whales use vocalizations to communicate, producing deep, resonant sounds that can travel for miles. These calls are often used to find mates or maintain bonds between mothers and calves.
- Calves: Southern Right Whale calves are born with a distinctive white coloration, which helps them blend in with the bright, reflective surface of the water.
- Food: Southern Right Whales are primarily filter feeders, consuming large quantities of tiny marine organisms known as krill. They spend much of their time near the surface, where they can be easily observed. However, they feed mostly in the area of the Antarctic Circle, which is rich in krill and other small species.
- Breeding and Calving: these whales migrate from the Antarctic Circle (full of krill and food) to warmer waters during the winter months to mate and give birth. Patagonia’s coasts, particularly the Valdés Peninsula, are renowned for their large populations of Southern Right Whales, which congregate in the area to breed and raise their young. They do this because it’s an area with protected bays (winds and weather).
Where and When to See Southern Right Whales in Argentina
The best place to witness the Southern Right Whale is Peninsula Valdés in Chubut Province, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that draws these magnificent animals every year. From June to late November, the whales gather in the protected bays around the peninsula to breed and nurse their young, making it one of the prime locations in the world for whale watching.Consider as well that the penguins arrive mids September (until March, early April), just in case you want to see both species.
The small towns of Puerto Pirámides and Puerto Madryn serve as starting points for whale-watching tours. Puerto Pirámides, in particular, is known for offering boat excursions that allow you to get close to the whales and witness their behaviors up close, often within just a few meters of the boat. On calm days, you can even spot whales from the shore*, which is ideal if you prefer a more relaxed experience.
*If you reach between June and early October, don’t miss El Doradillo Beach , where you can see them from the coast. Late October and November is less common to see them from the coast (you’d have to take the tour boat).
Other animals in Peninsula Valdes
Beyond the Southern Right Whales, Peninsula Valdés is also home to a rich variety of other wildlife, such as Orcas, Southern Elephant Seals, Penguins , Pichi Armadillos, Foxes, Guanacos, Choiques(Rheas), Sea Lions, Patagonian Maras, some of the birds of Patagonia, etc..
