The Hooded Grebe (Podiceps gallardoi), known locally as Macá Tobiano, is one of the most critically endangered birds in South America.

Endemic to the windswept plateaus of Argentine Patagonia, the Hooded Grebe is not only visually striking but also highly specialized in its habitat requirements. Its discovery as recently as 1974 makes it one of the most fascinating and enigmatic bird species in Argentina. Photo by Francisco Gonzalez Taboas.

Where to See It

This rare grebe is restricted to a small range within Santa Cruz Province, Argentine Patagonia. Key locations include:

  • Meseta del Strobel (also known as the Lago Buenos Aires Plateau)
  • Lago Strobel and nearby basaltic lakes
  • Lagoons near Patagonia National Park
  • Occasionally, coastal estuaries during winter migration, such as the Río Gallegos estuary

These birds depend on remote, high-altitude lakes—typically above 900 meters (2,950 ft) above sea level—with crystal-clear water and specific aquatic vegetation. Even in the right habitat, they are difficult to spot.

Physical Characteristics

The Hooded Grebe stands out for its elegant appearance and remarkable courtship displays.

  • Size: Approximately 32 cm (12.5 in) long
  • Coloration: Distinctive black “hood” covering the head and neck
  • Body: White with gray back and flanks
  • Eyes: Bright red
  • Courtship: Elaborate synchronized dances performed with mates

Its beauty and intricate behavior make it highly sought after by birdwatchers, although observing one in the wild requires patience and luck.

Behavior and Diet

  • Feeding: Dives underwater to feed on aquatic insects and small invertebrates
  • Breeding behavior: Territorial during nesting season, forming solitary pairs or small colonies
  • Migration: Breeds in highland lakes and migrates to lower elevations during winter

The species depends heavily on stable water levels and predator-free breeding conditions.

Reproduction and Lifespan

  • Breeding season: November to March
  • Nests: Built on floating vegetation mats
  • Clutch size: Usually 1–2 eggs
  • Chicks: Precocial and often ride on the backs of their parents shortly after hatching

Main Threats

  • Introduced predators, especially American mink and kelp gulls
  • Hydrological changes affecting lake levels
  • Climate change impacting breeding cycles and habitat stability
  • Low reproductive success in the wild

With fewer than 800 mature individuals remaining, even small environmental changes can have devastating consequences for the species.

Conservation Efforts

The Hooded Grebe has become a flagship species for conservation in Patagonia. Organizations such as Aves Argentinas and Patagonia National Park are actively involved in protecting the species through:

  • Predator control programs
  • Habitat monitoring and protection
  • Captive breeding and reintroduction initiatives
  • Ranger patrols and environmental education programs

The creation of Parque Patagonia Argentina and nearby private reserves also helps safeguard critical breeding lakes.

Best Way to Spot It

  • Visit Laguna Los Escarchados or Laguna El Sello with experienced local guides
  • Travel during late spring and summer, when birds are breeding
  • Join conservation-focused expeditions or birdwatching tours in the Patagonian steppe

Note: Due to the species’ delicate conservation status, tourism access is carefully managed to minimize disturbance.

Tours in Argentina and Chile

The Hooded Grebe is more than a beautiful bird—it is a powerful symbol of conservation in Patagonia. Protecting this species also means preserving the fragile highland wetlands that support many other forms of wildlife.

Watching a Macá Tobiano glide across a remote Patagonian lake is one of the most unforgettable wildlife experiences in southern Argentina.
